Armand is a vampire. He doesn't make a secret of the fact, but his physical abilities are superior to an average human are worth addressing for the uninitiated.
More importantly, he was previously a leader of a cult of vampires that taught, as Lestat de Lioncourt referred to them, "the old rules and old ways": remaining hidden, living in "squalor and despair", not letting anyone learn of their true vampiric natures (likely on pain of death). Lioncourt implied he had a hand in the clan's destruction.
Armand is a consumate liar and objected to being accused of the fact; he will manipulate, nitpick and "gaslight" to try and distract from or avoid the heart of an issue; and if pressed too far, will threaten with violence.
